Gallbladder is a small organ that is present on the right part of the abdomen below the liver. Gallbladder cancer is discovered usually in later stages. It is not easy to diagnose because it doesn’t shows early symptoms. This type of cancer is more common in women. Risk of gallbladder cancer increases with increase in age, the patient having gallbladder cancer history in past are more likely to get this cancer again, overweight or obese people are more likely to have gallbladder cancer. Other factor may include infection in gallbladder.
The symptoms may include severe abdomen pain in specifically upper right section of the abdomen, itchiness, temperature, sudden severe weight loss, vomiting and symptoms of jaundice.
Test used to diagnose gallbladder cancer includes blood tests, ultrasound, CT scan and MRI scan.
Treatment and Recovery:
First method to treat gallbladder cancer is through surgery. Surgeries can be done depending on the following types
Cholecystectomy: It is procedure to remove the gallbladder.
Radical gallbladder resection: this procedure involves the removal of gallbladder in a wedge-shaped section of the liver near the gallbladder.
Palliative surgery: It is the surgery to remove the tumor from the gallbladder causing gallbladder cancer. This surgery relieves the blockage of the bile ducts in intestines and stops bleeding.
Radiation therapy and chemotherapy is also done depending upon at which stage the cancer is now.
