Symptoms & Diagnosis

Hiatus hernia can be commonly treated by the fundoplication procedure. Fundoplication is the process in which the opening of the diaphragm is tightened to prevent the esophagus from bulging upwards through the opening of the muscle walls. There are three types of hiatus hernia.

Sliding hernia is a type I hernia. It is a displacement of the gastroesophageal junction into the thoracic cavity. In second type gastroesophageal junction is in its place but the position of the gastric fundus changes above the diaphragm. In the third type of hernia both the both the gastroesophageal junction and the stomach herniate above the diaphragm. The symptoms of this hernias causes a severe pain and inability to do the regular work.

Hiatus hernia can be diagnosed by a special X-ray, or second method of diagnosis is endoscopy.

Recovery is very fast as most patient start to walk on the day of the surgery itself. They can get discharged on the second or third day of the surgery and a complete recovery will be within two or three weeks.
